On May 27, Moscow Country Club, a branch of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s GlavUpDK, for the first time held the MGIMO Rector A.V. Torkunov Cup Golf Tournament. It was organized by the MGIMO Alumni Association and BCS Global Markets investment bank with support of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s GlavUpDK.

The tournament was held at Russia’s first 18-hole golf course in a stableford full handicap format. The event gathered about 70 participants, including well-known political and public figures, in particular, Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Sergei Naryshkin, representatives of Russian businesses and mass media, students and graduates of MGIMO University.

Representatives of the accredited in Moscow diplomatic corps, in particular, heads of the diplomatic missions of Uzbekistan, Finland, the European Union, as well as diplomats of the embassies of Vietnam, India, South Korea and Côte d'Ivoire, took an active part in the MGIMO Rector Cup tournament.

MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov thanked all the tournament participants and guests for their interest in the competition, drawing their attention to the fact that golf brings people together regardless of their age, nationality or beliefs. He also expressed the hope that with the GlavUpDK support the tournament will become traditional in the future and will allow an even greater number of MGIMO students and graduates to join in this sport at the beautiful golf resort near Moscow - Moscow Country Club.

Welcoming the tournament participants, Acting Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s GlavUpDK Elena Ryabtseva said that the Main Administration is proud to have the opportunity to hold the MGIMO Rector Cup event during the year of its 95th anniversary, adding that GlavUpDK will do its best to secure a long life for the tournament and its highest level.

It was a warm dry day, despite the variable May weather, so the golfers could not only turn in a good performance, but also enjoy completing all 18 holes of the picturesque Nakhabino golf course. The most successful amateur athletes were awarded prizes in six categories, including “Rector’s Event,” “Student Event,” “Women’s Event” and “MGIMO Alumni Event.”

The prize winners in the “Rector’s Event” were Chairman of the State Duma Sergei Naryshkin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and High Technology Vladimir Kononov and Deputy Head of the State Duma Committee on Construction and Land Relations Sergei Petrov.

Receiving the award from MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, Chairman of the State Duma Sergei Naryshkin thanked all the organizers of the tournament and expressed confidence that golf, which is actively gaining popularity in Russia, will soon become one of the favorite sports and leisure activities in the country.
