Literary Salon: Ambassadors of Russian Culture meeting focuses on Fyodor Dostoyevsky
The 4th meeting of the literature and music series Literary Salon: Ambassadors of Russian Culture took place at the House of Reception of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This time, the event was focused on the personality and works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
Organized by GlavUpDK under the MFA of Russia together with the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature named after V. I. Dal, this project traditionally brings together representatives of the foreign diplomatic corps accredited in the Russian Federation. This meeting, called Prophetic Words of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, was scheduled to coincide with Diplomatic Workers’ Day celebrated in Russia on February 10.
The permanent host of the Literary Salon, Director of the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature Dmitry Bak served as the guide through Dostoyevsky's life. "Dostoyevsky has been and is the exemplary ambassador of the Russian culture because Russians, as well as people from other countries, still use his works to make up their opinions of the Russian culture, the Russian world and value system," Mr. Bak said, adding that Dostoyevsky is one of the most often-translated authors in the world.
The meeting immersed its guests into the 19th century atmosphere. The House of Reception welcomed opera singer Aleksei Makshantsev to sing some pieces that Dostoyevsky used to love himself. Writer and screenwriter Amvrosy Svetlogorsky, who played Dostoyevsky in a recent TV documentary, read out the Pushkin Speech delivered by the writer on June 8, 1880, at a meeting of the Russian Literary Society.
Guests were also presented with an exhibition of unique items connected to Dostoyevsky's life and works, as well as his personal belongings, provided by the storage of the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature. Art pieces interpreting scenes from Dostoyevsky's books completed the introduction to his literary universe.
The hosts also presented a bust of Fyodor Dostoyevsky by sculptor Grigory Pototsky.The Literary Salon: Ambassadors of Russian Culture education and culture project, organized by GlavUpDK under the MFA of Russia in partnership with the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature named after V. I. Dal, helps members of foreign diplomatic corps gain insight into the heritage of Russian writers, demonstrate the beauty of the Russian language and expand cultural and humanitarian ties. Meetings focused on Fyodor Tyutchev, Alexander Griboyedov and Alexander Pushkin have taken place since 2023.
