Zavidovo Celebrates Its Birthday

Last weekend, Recreational Complex Zavidovo celebrated its 63rd anniversary.

Head of GlavUpDK at the MFA of Russia Sergey Makarov, a journalist, publicist, Palestinian ambassador in the USSR in 1983-1986 Rami Al Shaer, a soviet basketball player, Merited Master of Sport of the USSR Ivan Edeshko and a professional basketball player Vladimir Dyachok each gave a welcoming speech at the event.

“Today, we celebrate the 63rd anniversary of Zavidovo. I would like to congratulate the Zavidovo team and all its friends, those who have been spending their holidays here for many years and those who have just recently found out about Zavidovo, with this landmark event. We would love to see you visit this place each year, joining us in our celebrations and organizing your own. It is vital for us that you feel comfort here at all times,” said Sergey Makarov in his speech to the audience. “Traditionally, on this day, Zavidovo hosts the Summer Diplomatic Games for diplomatic corps that gather many viewers. Unfortunately, this year, the celebration is open only for our residents who are required to follow all the appropriate regulations. But I sincerely wish it to be as festive as ever, like it always has been in Zavidovo, and I would like to see you all having fun.”

Vladimir Dyachok, who represented the Russian Basketball Federation, donated to the Zavidovo museum a T-shirt worn by the leader of the national female basketball team Maria Vadeeva and a ball signed by all team members.

The Zavidovo team has prepared a number of surprises for the guests, including the special celebration program titled “A Birthday in the Yard” which features a concert, sporting competitions, contests and other fun games.

This day, Zavidovo organized several events: concerts of cover bands and singers; dance master classes for tap dance and twist; chess, checkers, tables, lotto and dominoes tournaments and a basketball competition with basketball legends. The thematic playing field hosted the Olympic Street Sports Competitions which included tug of war, jump roping and keepie uppie.

Trampoline, carousels and animators entertained the younger audience.

And just as with every birthday, this celebration could not be complete without delicious food. Zavidovo cooks treated guests with national dishes, spit-roasted lamb; those with a sweet tooth enjoyed caramelized apples and cotton candies, and younger guests were offered a special menu for children.

All winners got prizes, and the most fortunate received certificates for a helicopter tour.

 

History of Zavidovo

Zavidovo history started on August 16, 1957, when the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued an Ordinance to organize a sporting fishing and hunting base for diplomatic corps.

During the first stage of the project, four three-room cabins for 15-20 persons were built. The construction continued, and in less than a year the number of cabins increased to 20, with a hotel with restaurant added at a later date.

In 1995, a multi-stage reconstruction and modernization project was started at the base with a view to create a modern and comfortable recreational facility. In September 1997, comfortable cottages, a hotel complex and sports complex were commissioned. The small riverside hotel that used to offer accommodations to foreign diplomats, in 1998 was redesigned into Shosha restaurant.

Zavidovo still continues to expand, develop its infrastructure and increase the range of services provided.

The recreational facility in located on the protected territory of 56 hectares and includes the hotel complex with a winter garden, tropical pool, saunas and a Turkish bath, modern conference halls, a restaurant and lobby bar; cottages and townhouses of different architectural styles; the Water Sports Center; a sports complex; a fishing pond; a golf field for training; restaurants and bars. There is a fueling station for boats.

The paramount principle of each employee here is care and individual approach to each client, and also kindliness and true Russian hospitality. The large number of offered services and big area ensure that each guest can find a thing to do to one’s liking. Zavidovo has enough space to offer accommodations and services for up to six hundred persons.

Guests can choose to stay at a cottage or townhouse. All these have different design and layout, but always with adequate equipment and furniture. The hotel complex is also available as a comfortable place to stay. The furniture and finishing of interiors, color palette and lighting design of rooms create an atmosphere of calm and coziness, with windows showing the beauty of the Volga River.

More than 40 types of sport are available to try out in Zavidovo. The sports complex is equipped with modern exercise machines, tables for ping-pong and billiards; there is also a number of courts for futsal, basketball, volleyball and tennis. Guests can rent bicycles, velomobiles, electric cars, boats, water bikes and much more; practice in clay pigeon shooting or compete in darts; go on a water tour, wonder through the forest edges, catch fish in a pond or large water bodies.

Younger guests will also not get bored. Children can join robotics classes, visit a spherical cinema and make a friend with one of the animals living on the mini farm. Each weekend Zavidovo organizes interesting and exciting animation programs.

The SPA complex with a tropical pool will sooth body and soul. A special note should be given to riverside banya facilities, which gained popularity not just among the residents. Zavidovo banya will help to forget worries, cure maladies and give an ample energy boost.

There are three restaurants that offer Russian and European cuisine. The thematic restaurants Shosha and Port’O’s menu includes freshly caught fish, rich ukha with a real bonfire smoke flavor and other treats from the Volga. Both restaurants are located on a picturesque riverside.
